Since I have installed kubuntu oneiric ozelot, gcstar won't start anymore. It shows the same behaviour under 1.6.1 and 1.6.2. There is no difference if I use a manually installed version or the one which comes with the distro.
When I start gcstar, the empty shelf is displayed. Then it says "loading - 28 of 195" and then it hangs. X Server goes up to 100% and nothing happens until I kill gcstar. I have removed item 28 from the gcstar database, but the message is still "loading 28 of 195". Any ideas what I can do to hunt down this error?

Hello,

This problem seems to happen when using the splash screen and image mode for the list. To temporarily deactivate the splash screen until a fix is released, use this command. Please confirm if that fixes the issue.

sed -i -e 's/splash=1/splash=0/' ~/.config/gcstar/GCstar.conf

Hello,

I am not sure this is the same issue because in your case there is a crash.

As I didn't manage to reproduce yours, I would need a collection (.gcs) that makes the problem happens. I also need the configuration you use. So I need the full directory ~/.config/gcstar

Hi,

I had the exactly same problem (freeze on splash screen with "loading xx of yy").

The workaround you suggest (disable splash screen) seems to work as GCStar now start.

But the CPU load goes to 50% (shared between GCStar and Compiz), ans GCStar is almost unusable (very slow scrolling in the collection, no way of writing text in entry field...)

I have no other informations to share (when GCstar is launch from a console, nothing is written..)

Hi all!

similar problem here with Ubuntu 11.10 and GCstar 1.6.2: after disabling splash, the collection loads. But then the cpu load stays at 50% (probably 100 on a single core).

There is one line of output per item of my collection:

I can get it to start up, and even to work, so long as I use the text/ list view and not the 'images' view. If I attempt to load the images view GCStar hangs and my machine becomes unresponsive due to high CPU. I am thinking that this is something to do with image handling

update: in the processlist, Xorg uses the cpu time.

There is no change after removing the directory with the images of my collection.

Hi,

I tried the package suggested by Devport (#13) but it doesn't change anything for me. The CPU still goes up to 50%, and Gcstar is still almost unusable.
Actually, using 'text view' instead of 'image view', as indicated by Squiff (#11), temporarily fix the problem.

I installed Ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine and tried many things. Unfortunately nothing fixed the issue.

It's working fine on Fedora, so it seems to be really Ubuntu specific. IMO, the problem occurs when trying to have a scrollable window with a background image. Whatever the method I tried to set the background image, it always ends up being really slow.

I guess that the next step now is to try to create a minimalistic program that will reproduce that issue to report a bug to Ubuntu. I'll try to do that in the next days. But if anyone else has an idea, or find a similar problem already reported, this will be really welcome.

The only workaround for the moment is to stop using a background image, or to switch to a text view.

The other mentioned problem concerning errors in the terminal is unrelated. It happens when grouping items in image mode. But this one should be easier to fix.

Hi all
I had the same problem here with ubuntu 11.10 / unity, and i found that changing the theme to another one, i.e. HighContrast, solved this issue and i can enter gcstar even in image visualization mode. Some themes work, some do not.
Of course, HighContrast is not a very cool theme to use...

Maybe this can help.
