GCStar 1.4.3 (downloaded from Getdeb.net)
Ubuntu 9.04 32bit clean install
Ubuntu 9.04 64bit clean install

Same 2 problems in both 32 and 64 bit OS's noted above:

1. GCStar 1.4.3 no longer finds movie data from ImDB
or Amazon US.

2. GCStar 1.4.3 immediately crashes when attempting to left or right click on movie cover jpg box to view or edit the movie cover jpg file. It will even crash with a simple mouse hover in the movie cover box area.

My GCstar database was originally created under Ubuntu 8.10, and GCStar worked well under Ubuntu 8.10. However, since the fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 64bit the 2 problems noted above have manifested themselves. At first, I thought it was th 64bit OS, so I used another hard disc and performed a fresh install of the 32bit version of Ubuntu 9.04. The problem remained the same.

Hi there!
I can confirm Rizlaw's bug!
I'm using Jaunty 9.04 64-bit version and it does crash whenever I chose an image file for my book or movie cover. Also, I can't retrieve any data from Amazon US too.

Please, try to fix it as soon as possible.

GCStar simply rocks!

I also confirm Rizlaw's bug!
I'm using Jaunty 9.04 64-bit version (clean install), Gcstar 1.4.3 downloaded from this site (Graphic mode installation and no missing dependency).
GCStar 1.4.3 crashes when attempting to left or right click on cover to view or edit cover jpg file. It also crashes when i put the mouse cursor on the cover box without clicking.

When i launch gcstar from the terminal (command line), i got this message when Gcstar crash :

Magic number checking on storable file failed at ../../lib/Storable.pm (autosplit into ../../lib/auto/Storable/fd_retrieve.al) line 398, at /usr/local/bin/../lib/gcstar/GCPlugins.pm line 98
Erreur de segmentation

Please, can you help ???

Hello,

I will need to install this distribution to test because it seems to be really specific to that one. Does someone tested with other Gtk2-Perl applications? You can find some of them on that page:

I use dvd::rip... but i have no problem with it...

In addition, i totally uninstalled gcstar 1.4.3, and install gcstar 1.3.2 from ubuntu Universe. No crash with this old version of GCstar with Ubuntu 9.04 64bit.
I hope that this can help ...

Hello,

I did some tests on a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 I did. And I didn't have the same problem. But I noticed a weird behavior with the button containing the picture associated to a movie.

So I did a fix. Could please someone test it. You just have to download that file and to copy it over the file with the same name where GCstar is installed.

This file is only for GCstar 1.4.3. Be careful also if you installed many GCstar's versions. Be sure to overwrite the correct one.

The file should be in usr/lib/gcstar or in /usr/share/gcstar/lib depending how you installed it. But this may vary.

Your fix solves the problem ! No more crash ! I can now click again on the picture button ! The blue arrow icon come back ! All seems work perfectly...

Although I subscribed to this thread when I started it, I didn't get any notifications of all the posts. I'm not sure why? In any event, I just read Tian's post and possible fix and I can report the fix works fine.

It's already in the repository. But if you tested it, maybe you had the problem mentioned there:

Please note -

on my old ubuntu hardy heron (8.04 ?) gcstar 1.4.3 itself works flawless - the search plugins to amazon and imdb never timeout or finish though.

So might be that the search plugins by themselves have a problem? gcstar -u was run.

When querying amazon US or imdb I have to cancel, shut down gcstar completely and start it again to be able to query working DBs as well.

Annoyingly, this has not been fixed in Ubuntu 9.10.

Downloading the 1.5.0 beta 1 source and compiling that works, mostly.

Try using the ppa to get the latest version - it's had a lot of bugs fixed since the 1.5.0 beta:
