Caching of overlays and resized images for image mode of items list
Hi!
When I start gcstar with my games collection on my desktop computer with lots of "horse-power", the collection will open quite fast, but when I do it on my poorly-developed netbook, it will take a lot of time to load (almost a minute with only ~70 items in my collection), using 100% cpu and about 7% of 1GB memory. This happens if I use Image mode for items list.
I am not very familiar with the gcstar internals, but I believe that this due to image generation for the items list.
I was wondering whether it would be better to use cached images for items list, so the generation of thumbnails (and shadows/overlays) would only happen when adding a new item or after changing the preferences (for the display of items list).
I hope I made my point clear.
Best, etc

batic - I've got plans to work on the speed of the image list, using a method similar to what you've described. Can you let me know what the typical file size and resolution of your image files is, so I can see if the improvements I have planned will benefit you?

Re: Caching of overlays and resized images for image mode of items list
That is great news!
Actually, I have boardgames collection and I use hi-res pictures for images. Typical resolutions of images are 1000x1500, but range from 500x500 to 3000x4000 with file size ranging from 300kB to several MB, hence thumbnail generation is indeed cpu extensive.
Hope that answers your question.
Best,
M

Re: Caching of overlays and resized images for image mode of items list
I certainly hope some form of caching or other speedup is in the works, without it the start-up time is positively unbearable even with ~70 movies with ~1400x2000 sized covers. After all, the image mode is why we use gcstar in the first place, and the images never really change once set, yet the startup gets slowed down infernally indeed every time.

Re: Caching of overlays and resized images for image mode of items list
This is implemented in svn now, and will be available from gcstar 1.6.0. The startup time improvements are dramatic, on my (small) collection of 200 films, it now loads in 3 seconds, as opposed to 90 seconds without the cache!! ![]()

Should you have a problem using GCstar, you can open a bug report or request some support on GCstar forums.
