Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Hi guys.

First, GREAT project. It's exactly what I've been looking for, and I appreciate your work on it.

I have a large amount of ISBNs (500+) I'd like to import. I can do this with putting them in a CSV and importing them, but the problem is their information isn't automatically fetched upon doing so. I have to choose each one and click the "Fetch information" button.

Is there a way to have this happen automatically?

Thanks!

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

are you using the latest csv import plugin (follow the instructions to do an update of the plugins for gcstar)? it should support fetching information for imported items.

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

I know it's been a *long* while since I asked this, but here's what I've done:

1. Installed GCStar on Ubuntu Lucid. This installs 1.5.0
2. Run gcstar -u from the command line and successfully updated the plugins.
3. Tried to re-import a CSV containing ISBNs.

While the ISBNs are imported and are proprerly set, the entries still aren't auto-updated from Amazon. I have to go to each and press "Fetch Information".

Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?

Thanks!

Could you try the version from the dev ppa (https://launchpad.net/~gcstar/+archive/gcstar-dev) and see if you have any luck with that?

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Once again, sorry for the delay. I had something come up that pushed this project aside, but I'm now back on it.

So I removed gcstar, added the ppa, and installed the package via:

sudo apt-get install gcstar=1.6.0ubuntu2

Dpkg shows me this:

$ dpkg -l | grep gcstar
ii  gcstar                                                               1.6.0ubuntu2                                    Manage your collections of movies, games, bo

I also ran gcstar -u to update the plugins.

However, when I run gcstar, the About menu still says 1.5.0. And, importing the CSV still does the same thing. It imports the isbns, but it doesn't automatically fetch the info from Amazon.

Have I done something wrong?

Thanks!

I had it wrong...I had another version of gcstar installed in /usr/local. Looks like 1.6.0 is working. Thanks!

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Actually, spoke too soon. It looks like it's working, but ends up setting all of the imported books to the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I suspect it's simply not using the search results properly, because I do see it searching on the correct isbn.

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Just to confirm the same problem.  Nearly 400 ISBN's imported today but all have the same title "The Girl who kicked the hornet's nest" and so I am having to Update every single one individually.sad

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Just realised "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and my book, "The Girl who kicked the hornet's nest" are both by the same author, Stieg Larsson (and I don't actually have that book!

Also, multiple selecting several books in the display window and then clicking "Update" brings up various editions of those same two books.   So it looks like the code is submitting the (consistently) wrong ISBN to the server....

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Can you give me a few details to help me track this one down?

1. Which amazon plugin are you using? (ie US/UK/etc)

2. Can you give me a few sample ISBNs from your collection? (Or if you could attach the csv file, that would be even more help!)

3. Do you see the same behaviour if you search manually for each isbn, or is it only when using the csv import plugin?

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

1. I've tried both Amazon US and UK.
2. See the ISBNs at the end of this message.
3. This only happens with the CSV import. After they're imported, I can go to each record and click "Fetch Information" and it works as it should. So it's only when fetching in "batch" that the error happens.

Thanks!

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

Ok, this should be fixed in svn now. I've added a new option in the csv import dialog to choose which field to use to search for results with. So if you choose 'isbn' in that field, the import should work fine.

I've just pushed this version to the gcstar ppa, it's waiting in the build queue now.

Re: Batch import of books along with automatic fetching of information?

I just imported my DVDs and had the same problem as before...

BUT:  If you choose Main Item: Title as the field to be imported (my CSV was a list of Amazon ASIN's), all the title import correctly with images etc.

Going back to Books import, using the Title field instead of the ISBN field to import, does import the correct images and book information, but, unfortunately, the title remains with the ISBN and is not overwritten with the correct Title.

138poohbear - i think your problem might be slightly different. Could you post a sample of your csv file for me to look at?

Should you have a problem using GCstar, you can open a bug report or request some support on GCstar forums.
