"Group By" should display the below the books, not above
When using the "Group By" feature in the Image View, the entries are currently displayed above the books on the shelf in 1.5.0.
[______Bob Williams____]
[Book 1] [Book 2] [Book 3]
[______Sally Forth_____]
[Book 4] [Book5]
[______Anony Mous____]
[Book 6] [Book 7] [Book 8]
This does not flow well. I believe that the entries should be displayed "below" the books, so that they figuratively "sit" on the shelf of their label.

Re: "Group By" should display the below the books, not above
Hope you don't mind a bump, but even in 1.6.0, it's still the same appearance. Rather than the label being on the shelf that the books rest on, it is above them, which can be a bit confusing while browsing through your collections.

I've started a bug report about this request, you can track it over at

Got it. You have to admit, that ASCII illustration looks so out of place on Launchpad! Too awesome!

I should also add, this would match the same format that bookstores use, such as Barnes and Noble.
Here is a photo illustrating the format of the shelves and their labels. The label is placed on the shelf that the corresponding books rest upon:

Re: "Group By" should display the below the books, not above
Hello,
The reason it was made like is to have the same display as in detailed mode. The category is before the items. I was also planning one day to add a button next to the title to be able to collapse/expand the list (also like in details mode). I don't know if it will be done one day, but I find it more logical to have the label before the items, especially when there are more than one rows.
So if someone does this change, please add also an option to be able to have the current display

Well, whether or not there are many rows for a certain label (Author, Publisher, etc), having the label on the lowest shelf for the referred books will more closely match what book stores do. Even after using GCstar many times, I keep finding myself pausing as I scroll through my collection (making sure I am reading it correctly), since the eye is trained to look at the "bottom" of a shelf (or shelves) when searching for something.

Any status on this? Seems that a lot of feature requests and bug reports have been stagnating. I'm not sure what the state of GCstar development is in 2012.

Should you have a problem using GCstar, you can open a bug report or request some support on GCstar forums.
