A friend and I created this little plugin for scanning big movie folders. Usually does a quite good job with the "Multiple Results->Take first" option.
Here the README:
GCstar ImportMovieFolder plugin
INSTALLATION
Put the lib folder into your gcstar installation base directory
(usually /usr/share/gcstar) and restart GCstar
USAGE
In GCstar select File->Import->MovieFolder. A dialog will apper. Enter your preferences and press the import button.
Most of the options given are quiet self explanatory. However here are some remarks:
This plugin looks up movies based on their file- and foldername. Unfortunately there is often unnecessary information contained in those strings, which makes it difficult to match the right movie. Therefore some modifications to the search string are performed.
Special characters and everything between (),{},[] brackets is automatically removed.
e.g. The.Shawshank.Redemption(1994.DVDRip.AC3.XviD.CD1).avi => The Shawshank Redemption
"Words to be removed" simply removes a single word.
e.g. using enlish, 1080p, etc.:
The.Shawshank.Redemption.english.1080p.avi => The Shawshank Redemption
"Words to mark the end of a title" These words and everything behind them is removed.
e.g. using DVDRip, etc.:
The.Shawshank.Redemption.1994.DVDRip.AC3.XviD.CD1.avi => The Shawshank Redemption 1994
If there there is a year given in the filename, "Try to match movie by year" will filter results using this year.
By slightly tuning the preferences according to your local movie collection the plugin should be able to recognise most movies correctly. It is then a good idea to use the option "Multiple Results->Take First" to make your life easier.

Re: Plugin for scanning big movie folders
Excellent! I will give this a try tonight! Can it be modded to import TV shows, too?

Re: Plugin for scanning big movie folders
I followed the instructions and put lib folder in /usr/share/gcstar so now have /usr/share/gcstar/lib with the GCImport and GCLang subfolders. I restarted gcstar, but cannot see the option movie folder under File > Import
Anyone got any ideas?
Really like to use this as it looks to be a huge improvement over the standard folder import

Re: Plugin for scanning big movie folders
Solved,must open nautilus as root copy and merge only lib folder downloaded in /usr/share/gcstar, replace files when asked for
that's all

Re: Plugin for scanning big movie folders
hm just noticed the server of my friend is down...
so here is the newer version if anybody needs it...made some bugfixes & introduced a new field which can be used to skip i.e. 2nd parts of a movie (so you dont end up twice with the same movie)...

Should you have a problem using GCstar, you can open a bug report or request some support on GCstar forums.
