Re: Version 1.7.1 released
I'm happy to see these reactions. I can't promise to spend as many time as I used to when I started the project, but at least I'll do that regularly.

Great to see the project is still alive - I've been checking back every couple of months and am extremely happy to see a bit of life in here again.

Re: Version 1.7.1 released

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
The site GNA.org used to publish GCstar releases was closed last May. Therefore there is no easy way to create new releases and have them pushed to various Linux distributions. Furthermore, the process to create package Windows installers seems to have been broken for a long time.
Anyhow, I've set up a GIT repo to track the lastest contributions since the last release (in the Test branch). It is possible to use it to benefit from the changes by downloading an archive and unpacking it in the directory where GCstar was installed.
Note that for Windows systems, it may not work as the last binaries versions of GCstar don't seem to support the HTTPS/TLS protocols that are increasingly used by web sites. In these environnements, the best way is to install a Perl distribution (ActivePerl or Strawberry for example), install some additionnal modules (most notably GTk2) then launch the gstar script in the bin directory.
Not knowing which validation process was used by Tian before making releases and without his approval, it's difficult to create new "official" version of GCstar.

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
Thank you, Tian, for coming back to GCstar! I am truly grateful for all of your good work. I am an avid comic book reader and a dedicated Linux user, and GCstar is the best database manager available on Linux for comic books. Thank you!

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
Hello,
The hosting site of GCstar closed down last year. The latest source code is still available in a GitLab repository. Some basic installation instructions are available.

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
Some windows packages can still be found on the web (here in a discussion of this forum or there on GitHub).
However, these are old versions of GCstar and you may not be able to use web sites to get informations on collection items such as games, films, books, TV series, music. For that, following the installation instructions linked in my previous message should improve our experience of GCstar.

Hello, I ran into some problems trying to install GCStar.
I installed Perl, but when trying to install Gtk I get the error message
"ppm.bat install failed: Can't find any package that provides Gtk2"
I don't really know what I'm doing though, I just try to follow the instructions. Would you mind explaining a bit more in detail?

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
Hello Naramzu
could you try to do
Code:
ppm repo add http://www.sisyphusion.tk/ppm/ ppm install gtk2
to try a site that have the Gtk2 installation package?
If it works, I'll add that to the installation procedure.

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
It worked, thank you very much!
However, now I have another problem: I can't open my collection.
I'm getting this error message:
Fatal error with plugin GCAmazonDE
: Can't locate URL/Encode.pm in @INC (you may need to install the URL::Encode module) (@INC contains: C:\Program Files (x86)\GCstar\gcstar\lib\gcstar C:/Perl64/site/lib C:/Perl64/lib) at C:\Program Files (x86)\GCstar\gcstar\lib\gcstar/GCPlugins/GCgames/GCAmazonDE.pm line 34.

Compilation failed in require at (eval 401) line 2.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 401) line 2.
Any idea what to do?

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
In order to get books description from the german version of Amazon, the plugin needs to decode "URL encoded" string. I first used the URL::Encode library but it has to be installed manually. I found another way that doesn't introduce any dependency. You should get the latest version of this plugin on Gitlab and test again.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
I don't even need the german Amazon plugin, but I couldn't open my collection without it.
Anyway, everything works now!
Thank you very much for your help and for all the work you do for GCStar!

Re: Version 1.7.1 released
GCstar tries to load all available plugins to be able to propose a full list of possibilities to the users.
I started to remove the deprecated ones (web site not available) but simply renaming them so that GCstar skips them. I also started to identify with a name starting with ZZZ_ the plugins that are not currently working but may be repaired some day if someone needs them.
For Windows user, I'm considering a portable distribution that would package everything consistently in an archive file. It could be a 1.7.2 or 1.8.0 version if the original author allows it.

Should you have a problem using GCstar, you can open a bug report or request some support on GCstar forums.
