New user: load list of ISBb

I looked at the menus and did not see how to load a list of ISBNs from a text file with one number per line.

I have a barcode scanner and a short list to use when learning how to import or otherwise load it into the application. Please advise me how to load these data.

TIA,

Rich

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

Select import from CSV in File menu, unselect "Ignore first line", choose the web site you want to query, select ISBN as the field to use for searching, choose ISBN as the field to be imported.

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

kerenoc,

I don't think your suggestion will work. The file is plain ASCII text (.txt) with a list of 13-digit ISBNs, one per line. It's not a .csv and the first line is valid data, not headings from a spreadsheet.

Don't I need to import the ISBNs into the database before I select a web site to query for data for each ISBN?

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

My apologies; it sort of works.

I renamed the file to have the .csv extension, no field separator, unselected ignoring the first line, and picked ISBN as the field to import. I don't see how to attach a screen shot of the result so the image can be downloaded here: <http://www.fileconvoy.com/dfl.php?id=g66556a92876302161000358004c60a4472f7902951>

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

You have to keep a separator (wink otherwise GCstar will split the ISBN after each character.

If you specify a web site in the Import dialog and choose ISBN as the key to search for items, GCstar will download the information for each book.

If not, you will have a list of items with the ISBN and you can fetch information later.

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

We're still not communicating well.

Where do I put a separator, and what is that separator?

I don't specify a web site.

I have a list of ISBNs that starts like this:
9781416560784
9780688102296
9780671892067
9781451645859

There's a newline (\n) after each number. How do I create a list of ISBNs that can be imported?

Thanks,

Rich

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

In the import dialog, you should keep a character as separator : as there is only one column in the file, you can choose any non alphanumeric character.

The information of items for the ISBNs you provided can be downloaded from Amazon web sites, when you import the CSV file or later using the fetch information button.

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

I'm getting closer now. I added a ';' to the end of each line and imported the list (as a .csv) into a new collection. No errors reported. I specified 'Amazon-US' to fill in data associated with each ISBN.

However, what I now see are two empty windows and the status line reporting '23 books.' The left pane is totally blank while the right pane is tabbed with each tab displaying empty widgets.

Thanks for the end-of-line correction and I'm still missing something.

Rich

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

It's not necessary to add a ';' at the end of each line when you use it as a separator as long as you set it in the import dialog.

If the left panel really empty or can you select a line so that it displays an item with only the ISBN field set? If so, it means that the Amazon plugin is not working.

Try to launch gcstar manually using "perl -w gcstar" and scan the output for errors on http requests.

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

kerenoc,

Haven't yet removed the semi-colons.

Left panel is really empty.

The error log file and a screen shot of the application are in the file, rshepard.zip at this URL: <http://www.fileconvoy.com/dfl.php?id=ga77f25515e6986751000358522eeb46bceec2aec36>

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

With the ISBNs you provided you should have the following lines in the log :

Code:

Loading page http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=stripbooks&field-keywords=9781416560784
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/BakeWise-Successful-Baking-Magnificent-Recipes/dp/1416560785/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9781416560784&qid=1625172854&s=books&sr=1-1
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=stripbooks&field-keywords=9780688102296
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/Age-Greed-Triumph-Finance-Decline/dp/B007CKY2IC/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9780688102296&qid=1625172857&s=books&sr=1-1
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=stripbooks&field-keywords=9780671892067
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/Fine-Lines-Simon-Beckett/dp/0671892061/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9780671892067&qid=1625172860&s=books&sr=1-1
Loading page http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=stripbooks&field-keywords=9781451645859

Can you successfully import from Amazon when you fetch information from the right panel using a search on ISBN?

Re: New user: load list of ISBb

I had not tried to do anything before. Just now, I entered a single ISBN (see tellico.png) and selected amazon-us. It found that ISBN and returned information. I was able to add that book to the database (see tellico2.png).

Both screenshots available here: <http://www.fileconvoy.com/dfl.php?id=ga024e3dfc8d1a4821000358607bedcd6705d557443>

Thank you.
